7 Nigerian celebrities who are now ‘pastors’
It’s becoming increasingly common to see Nigerian entertainers transition from the world of entertainment to ministry. From musicians and actors to comedians and public figures, many have answered what they describe as a “ministerial calling,” using their platforms to inspire and impact lives spiritually.
Interestingly, some continue to balance both roles—entertainers by profession and preachers by passion. This article highlights a few prominent Nigerian celebrities who have stepped into the pulpit.
1. Zack Orji
Zack Orji is a veteran Nigerian actor, director, and movie producer who gained fame through the 1991 film Unforgiven Sin. A former President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Orji is widely known for portraying pastors in Nollywood movies. Fittingly, he was eventually ordained as a full-time evangelist at Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI) and now actively participates in evangelical outreach across the country.
2. Kanayo O. Kanayo
Kanayo Modestus Onyekwere, popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, is another Nollywood legend who transitioned into ministry. Known for playing ritual-themed roles in films, Kanayo now shares a different message off-screen. He has been seen preaching at Christ Mission Worldwide Church in Egbeda, Lagos, showing a stark contrast between his on-screen characters and his off-screen spiritual life.
3. Eucharia Anunobi
Eucharia Anunobi rose to fame with her glamorous roles in Glamour Girls and Abuja Connection. In a surprising turn, she surrendered her life to Christ and was ordained as an evangelist on February 5, 2012, at Fresh Oil Ministry Church in Egbeda, Lagos, under the leadership of Pastor Psalm Okpe. Despite continuing her acting career, she now dedicates much of her time to youth counseling and preaching both locally and internationally.
4. Jimmy Odukoya
Jimmy Odukoya, son of the late Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, is both an actor and now the senior pastor of The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos. Before taking up the leadership mantle, he served in various pastoral roles, including at The Cave Church. His unique blend of ministry and the arts appeals especially to younger audiences.
5. Patience Ozokwor
Patience Ozokwor, known for her villainous roles in Nollywood, is also a gospel singer and a committed Christian. In a 2019 interview, she emphasized that acting can be as powerful as preaching when it comes to reaching a global audience. That same year, she was seen ministering at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Alaba, Lagos. Ozokwor often shares her faith journey and personal experiences with Christ during speaking engagements.
6. Banky W
Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, is a successful musician, actor, and now pastor. In 2020, he began serving in full-time ministry at This Present House Church under Pastor Tony Rapu. His social media presence reflects a shift toward spiritual leadership, with sermons and faith-based content complementing his music. Banky has also released gospel music, including a notable collaboration with Mercy Chinwo.
7. Liz Benson
Veteran actress Liz Benson began her acting career at the tender age of five and became a household name in Nollywood. In 2009, she married Bishop Great Emeya of Rainbow Christian Assembly, Warri, Delta State, and was ordained as an evangelist. Together, the couple leads the church, with Liz now fully immersed in ministry and charitable outreach.
