‘An Angel’: Man Heroically Saves People Trapped Amid Hurricane Helene Using Just His Surfboard
His remarkable efforts took place at Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, last week during a devastating hurricane that left some residents trapped inside their homes, unable to escape.
One of those residents was Anne McIntosh, whose home was so flooded that she couldn’t even open the door.
“The beds were floating,” she said. “The couch was floating. My brother and his wife were on the counters.”
Hearing their cries for help, Thomas jumped on his surfboard and paddled over to rescue them.
“He saved us,” McIntosh shared. “He got the door open, paddled us to safety, and he did it with such grace. He’s like an angel walking.”
Thomas went on to help other stranded residents as well.
McIntosh expressed her deep gratitude for his selflessness, calling Thomas an “angel” multiple times.
“He’s truly an angel walking,” she said. “He’s the hero of Indian Rocks Beach now. He did it so gracefully. Thank you, Marty. I love you for it, and you deserve all the good things in life.”
Hurricane Helene, which struck last week, has become the second-deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in the past 50 years, with at least 190 confirmed deaths.
More than half of those casualties occurred in North Carolina, where entire towns have been wiped out.
Amid the devastation, other acts of heroism are surfacing. For instance, Katrina Foster-Fernandez and her seven children have been serving food and supplies to 150 people daily in Ludowici, Georgia, since the hurricane’s onset.
“If I can help someone else be okay, I’ll always do it,” Foster-Fernandez said. “Always.”
