Banky W Declares Both Prosperity And Poverty Gospels Are False & Corrupted

Nigerian singer, actor, and pastor Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has declared that both the prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel misrepresent the true message of Christianity.

In a recent podcast interview, the entertainer-turned-preacher explained that the genuine gospel emphasizes spiritual growth and balance—not extreme views that either glorify wealth or romanticize hardship.

“The prosperity gospel teaches that serving God guarantees riches—that’s false. The poverty gospel teaches that serving God means you must be poor—that’s also false,” Banky W stated.

He described both ideologies as distorted versions of Christ’s teachings, adding that the truth lies in balance: “God blesses us so we can be a blessing to others.”

As a pastor at The Waterbrook Church in Lagos, Banky W stressed that material wealth should never be seen as proof of faith or righteousness, noting that many Christians misunderstand the real purpose of prosperity.

He urged believers to live lives marked by service, generosity, and humility rather than chasing extremes that twist the essence of the gospel.

His remarks have since generated wide discussions online, with many Nigerians praising his perspective as a refreshing and realistic interpretation of Christian doctrine in today’s climate of conflicting teachings.
