Benue Christian Group Warns Against Foreign Meddling, Urges National Unity

The Concerned Christians of Benue State (CCBS) have issued a strong and passionate appeal for unity and vigilance, warning of increasing foreign interference and internal betrayal that they say pose serious threats to Nigeria’s sovereignty and stability.

In a statement signed by Chairman Matthew Samuel, the group expressed deep concern over what they described as the deliberate exploitation of ethnic and religious divisions—especially in the northern region—by foreign powers working in collaboration with certain local political actors.

“Nigeria stands once again at a critical juncture—where faith, patriotism, and the pursuit of peace are being tested,” Samuel stated.

He noted that since Nigeria’s independence, foreign interests have continuously attempted to meddle in the country’s internal affairs, often targeting the northern states as focal points for their destabilizing agendas.

“These foreign entities have not relied solely on overt aggression. Instead, they’ve engaged in subtle forms of interference, such as spreading propaganda, causing economic disruption, and fueling communal divisions,” Samuel said.

He also criticized some international human rights organizations, accusing them of straying from their original missions. “Groups once respected for promoting justice are now increasingly viewed as instruments of foreign political agendas,” he said.

Referring to the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Samuel noted it as a major development in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle for national cohesion. He accused certain failed politicians from Benue State of seizing the opportunity to stir unrest in the region for selfish political gain, often in alliance with organizations like Amnesty International.

“The collaboration between these political actors and Amnesty International is deeply troubling,” he said. “We question the credibility of the casualty figures being circulated—figures that seem more aligned with destabilizing narratives than with verified facts. The lack of transparency in these reports raises doubts about their intentions and sources.”

The CCBS stressed its firm opposition to any form of external manipulation in Nigeria’s affairs. “We are a people of faith, and our belief in Nigeria’s sovereignty is unshakable,” Samuel declared.

He called on government bodies, civil society, and international partners to unite in fostering peace, mutual respect, and accountability. “Our strength lies in our unity. Only through collective effort can we preserve our nation’s integrity and secure a peaceful future for the next generation.”

Finally, he urged Nigerians to remain alert, question information sources, and resist any narratives designed to manipulate public perception. “We must not allow foreign powers and their local enablers to shape our future. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient Nigeria—an example for other nations facing similar struggles.”
