CAN: Nigerian Christians congratulate Roman Catholic Church on Pope Leo XIV’s election
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Roman Catholic Church on the election of Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement issued on Friday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh described the election of Pope Leo XIV as a symbol of renewal and hope for the Catholic Church.
“CAN is confident that the new pontiff will uphold the values of peace, justice, and inclusiveness, building upon the legacy of those who came before him,” Archbishop Okoh stated.
He added, “We pray that Pope Leo XIV’s tenure will be marked by divine wisdom, robust health, and the strength to lead God’s people along the path of righteousness. May God guide and empower him in his sacred mission.”
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States was elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The historic announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where Cardinal Dominique Mamberti proclaimed “Habemus Papam” to the jubilant crowd in St. Peter’s Square.
Pope Leo XIV, the first American to hold the papacy, previously served as the superior general of the Augustinian order. He succeeds Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff and the first from Latin America, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
