CAN seeks transparency in probe of airstrip licence granted to Bishop Oyedepo’s church

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged the House Committees on Aviation and Legislative Compliance to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the airstrip license granted to the Living Faith Church Headquarters, also known as Canaanland, in Ota, Ogun State.

In October, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the approval of the license for the church to construct an airstrip, which would be managed by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency. This followed concerns raised by members of the House of Representatives, who called for the revocation of airstrip licenses issued to certain individuals and private organizations.

In a statement issued on Saturday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh acknowledged the lawmakers’ concerns about security and potential misuse of airstrips. However, he emphasized that the church complied with all legal requirements in securing the license. He cautioned against prematurely associating the church with illegal activities without credible evidence, as such actions could harm the integrity of both religious institutions and regulatory bodies.

Archbishop Okoh called on lawmakers to approach the issue with objectivity, avoiding religious bias, and underscored the church’s commitment to legality and transparency. He also highlighted Canaanland’s longstanding role as a center for peace, development, and community service.

He warned that revoking the license without substantial evidence would unjustly undermine the rights of religious organizations and set a concerning precedent. “Demonizing the church’s efforts without just cause is not only unfair but undermines the principles of justice and fairness upon which our nation is built,” he stated.

Okoh further encouraged stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue, viewing the situation as an opportunity to strengthen trust between religious institutions and the government. He affirmed CAN’s readiness to support measures that enhance national security while protecting the rights and freedoms of religious communities.
