Christian Council Raises The Alarm Over Tension In Nigeria

The President of the Christian Council of Nigeria, Most Rev. David Onuoha, has called on Nigerians from all backgrounds to unite and work together to safeguard the nation amid rising insecurity and economic difficulties.

In a statement released yesterday, Dr. Onuoha expressed deep concern over the increasing tension in the country, warning that the current state of affairs is detrimental to all citizens.

“At a time when economic hardship and insecurity threaten lives and property, our collective focus should be on finding solutions that will improve the well-being of the people,” he stated.

He urged leaders at all levels to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians and refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions.

“The best approach is to avoid decisions that, while politically convenient, may foster unease and confusion,” he cautioned, emphasizing that unchecked impunity often leads to chaos.

Addressing the judiciary, the Christian Council of Nigeria President urged judicial officers to uphold justice with fairness and integrity, likening their role to that of God—the supreme judge who establishes order.

“Nigerians rely on them for rulings that will enforce accountability and ensure that everyone, regardless of status, abides by the law,” he said.

He also reminded lawmakers that they are representatives, not substitutes, for the people, warning that any action contrary to public interest would be a betrayal of trust.

Condemning the rise in killings across the country, including attacks on civilians and security forces, Dr. Onuoha called for urgent action to halt “agents of destruction” such as herdsmen, terrorists, and bandits.

“These forces of destruction must be stopped before they destroy Nigeria,” he warned, stressing that achieving this requires an atmosphere of love, trust, and unity.

Despite the challenges, he assured Nigerians that the country is blessed with abundant resources capable of ensuring a good life for all—provided that equity, fairness, and brotherhood are upheld.

As Christians observe Lent and Muslims embark on the Ramadan fast, he encouraged all Nigerians to use this period for deep reflection, repentance, and renewed commitment to building a nation “where no one is oppressed.”

He concluded with a powerful biblical exhortation from Amos 5:24:
“Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
