Falcons’ coach deserves the same reward as players, Adeboye tells Tinubu

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has called on the Federal Government to reward national team coaches equally with players, following the Super Falcons’ victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Speaking during his sermon titled “The Winning Team” at the RCCG’s monthly Thanksgiving Service held at the church’s national headquarters, Throne of Grace Parish in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, Pastor Adeboye applauded President Bola Tinubu for the generous reward of $100,000 (in naira equivalent) given to each of the 24 Super Falcons players.

However, he emphasized that the coaching staff—including head coach Justin Madugu—also deserve the same level of recognition and appreciation.

“I thank the President for the gift to the Falcons,” he said.
“But I’m not quite convinced that the coaches should receive less than the players. Without coaches, the team wouldn’t achieve success.
I don’t want to stir controversy, but let’s not forget: God bless the coaches, because they are essential.”

It will be recalled that President Tinubu also conferred national honours on all 24 players and the 11-member technical crew, awarding them the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger, a three-bedroom apartment under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, and cash gifts—$100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each coach or staff member.

Pastor Adeboye, sharing a personal story from his past as a boxer in the 1960s, reflected on the critical role coaches play in shaping champions.

“I had a coach back in 1960 who was extremely tough on us. At times, we wondered if he was preparing us for the army,” he recalled.
“But looking back, I’m grateful. He brought out the strength in us.
He’d make me push against a wall like I was trying to pull it down. A good coach sees your potential and pushes you beyond your limits.”

He concluded by urging the government and the public to recognize and celebrate the discipline, experience, and foundational role coaches play in every winning team.
