John P. Kee to Be Honored at the 2025 BMI Trailblazers Awards

BMI will honor the talented songwriters and publishers behind the year’s most-performed Gospel songs at the 2025 BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards, taking place at Flourish Atlanta on Thursday, April 3rd. The event will spotlight Gospel music legend and pastor John P. Kee, who will be celebrated as a Trailblazer of Gospel for his extraordinary 40-year career. The ceremony will also recognize the creators and publishers of the past year’s 25 most-performed Gospel songs in the U.S., and will announce the BMI Gospel Song, Songwriter, and Publisher of the Year. Hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President, Creative, Atlanta, Catherine Brewton, the private gathering promises an inspiring afternoon of music and celebration.

Catherine Brewton praised John P. Kee, stating, “John P. Kee is a true visionary in Gospel music, and his work has left an indelible mark on the genre for over four decades. We’re honored to celebrate his dedication, artistry, and evangelism. This event will not only recognize his legacy but also applaud the incredible achievements of our award-winning songwriters and publishers.”

Known as the “Prince of Gospel Music,” John P. Kee is a multi-award-winning artist, songwriter, and beloved pastor whose influence has shaped contemporary Gospel. His musical journey began at just eight years old when he started playing piano and writing songs inspired by the music he heard in church. In the mid-1980s, he founded the New Life Community Choir (NLCC) in Charlotte, which became a cornerstone of Gospel music. Over his nearly 40-year career, Kee has written for iconic artists and groups, including The Hawkins FamilyVanessa Bell Armstrong, and Dr. James Cleveland’s Gospel Music Workshop of America, among others.

Kee’s music has been featured in films, TV shows, commercials, and even on Saturday Night Live. His accolades include 37 GMWA Excellence Awards27 Stellar Awardsthree BMI Awardstwo Billboard Music Awards, a Soul Train Music Award, and a Trailblazer Award from former President Bill Clinton. He has also received eight GRAMMY nominations and was inducted into the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Kee was previously honored at the BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards in 2001 and 2005.

Beyond his musical achievements, Pastor Kee has led the New Life Fellowship Center in Charlotte, NC, since 1995. Through innovative outreach and ministry, the church has grown into a vibrant, thriving community. This year’s Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards will celebrate Kee’s enduring legacy and the remarkable contributions of Gospel music’s finest creators.
