‘Nigeria has lost a father figure’ -  Northern CAN mourns Buhari

The Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a father figure whose leadership left a lasting legacy on Nigeria’s development.

In a statement issued in Kaduna on Sunday, the Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, noted that Buhari’s passing signifies the close of an important chapter in the country’s political journey. While acknowledging that public opinion was divided over some of Buhari’s policies during his tenure, Hayab emphasized the late President’s unwavering patriotism, discipline, and dedication to national unity.

He highlighted Buhari’s notable contributions to the Nigerian state, both as a military ruler from January 1984 to August 1985, and as a two-term democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He also recalled Buhari’s launch of the “War Against Indiscipline and Corruption,” which shaped national governance discourse.

Rev. Hayab extended heartfelt condolences to the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and the entire family, urging them to find comfort in the impactful legacy of service the late leader left behind. He prayed for God’s peace and strength to uphold the family during this time of mourning.

He also praised President Bola Tinubu for his response to the national loss, particularly for declaring a period of mourning and directing Vice President Kashim Shettima to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

Rev. Hayab urged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, regardless of political or religious differences. While recognizing differing perspectives on Buhari’s leadership, he stressed the importance of remembering the former president with dignity and appreciation for his sacrifices.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Buhari passed away in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday after a prolonged illness. In his honour, President Tinubu has directed that national flags be flown at half-mast.
