Pastor Oyakhilome reveals why gospel singers left his church

Christ Embassy’s founder, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, has explained why several well-known gospel artists departed from his church.

Speaking during Season 11, Phase 2 of Your LoveWorld, held from 5 to 7 February and shared on the church’s YouTube page on Friday, the LoveWorld Incorporated president addressed ongoing speculations about the exits of prominent gospel singers such as Sinach, Joe Praize, Frank Edwards, Eben, and others.

Without mentioning specific names, the 61-year-old preacher stated that he let them go because they were not fulfilling the mission God had ordained for Christians.

He explained, “Everything changed—the music in the church became worldly. Instead of worshipping God, they focused on celebrating themselves. How many of those singers were true soul winners? They would lead praise sessions but leave when it was time for prayer to perform elsewhere. They turned ministry into a profession, charging for their services while pretending to minister to God.”

Pastor Chris emphasized that many pastors failed to recognize how secular influences were creeping into the church, and rather than stopping it, they encouraged it. He admitted that he, too, had once celebrated these artists but later realized the need for change.

“When I changed, they refused to change with me. I had to let them go because God made it clear to me that this wasn’t the right path. I told them that while I once celebrated them, the Lord now requires us to do the right thing,” he added.

Straying from Evangelism

The televangelist also stressed that beyond musical talent, commitment to evangelism is essential for those serving God.

“I showed them the right way through Scripture, but by then, they had become too popular and too focused on making money—not even significant wealth, but just enough to cloud their hearts. They didn’t want to follow me in the direction God was leading us, so they chose a different path. I warned them that they were heading in the wrong direction. I hope they repent because the same churches that invite them now will one day stop once they, too, understand the truth.”

The Role of Worship Leaders

Pastor Chris further criticized the idea of gospel singers referring to themselves as worship leaders, stating that many had strayed from their true purpose.

“Those who move from place to place calling themselves worship leaders are on a false path. There is no such thing as a ‘worship leader ministry.’ Satan was the only one given that role, and God removed him.”

He concluded by stating that before their departure, he had warned the singers about their actions, urging them to remain faithful to God’s work.
